The Economy

Everyone seems to be concerned about the economy.

I am, too.

But worrying about the economy is something new for me.   When I was growing up in the hills of Kentucky, we didn’t talk about it.

Down at the store, the fellows sat around the stove and talked about hunting, fishing and farming, that sort of thing.  Every now and then, one would mention the fact that a pair of shoes cost four dollars. That’s about as close as we came to talking about the economy.

After supper, my dad, grandpa and uncles would sit on the front porch and talk about how many acres they had plowed today and how many they would plow tomorrow. My mom and grandma would talk about canning tomatoes, corn and other vegetables.

As we sat on the porch, with our tummies full from a good supper, we had faith that tomorrow we would be well fed again.

After I graduated from college and started to work in my profession, I started saving for the future and making investments like everyone else.   Then I started really worrying about the economy.

Sometimes I wish I was back on the front porch.

I think you might've hit a a solution to the economic mess Carl. Lets get the government get the money back from those banks and wall street folks. They can build us all front porches with rockers, provide Farmer's Almanac subscriptions, and let all the good folks find a way to work it all out...can't do 'worse', that's for sure !

How true that is Carl. I remember my gandmother's cooking in Laurel county and saving up enough money to go buy a transistor radio.
