My Own Road

I’ve traveled over the country for many years, making speeches and entertaining. Most of my performances are humorous, but on some occasions I say something serious. A serious statement I have made many times is, "No matter how far you travel or what you become, don’t ever forget where you are from." I can never forget where I am from because the place now has my name on it.
If you travel north about l5 miles from London, Kentucky, there is a little lane that turns off the paved road. The little house where I was born was on that road. The road was called Ponderosa Lane, but as of a few weeks ago, it was renamed. It is now CARL HURLEY LANE and it has a nice big green sign that says so. It is one of the greatest honors I have ever received.
A lot of important people have large highways named after them. My little road is only about a mile long and it is not paved, but that doesn’t matter. It is not how long or how wide a road that’s important. It is the honor.
When the nice people of Laurel County, Kentucky, told me that they were going to name the road for me, I really didn’t know what to say. Then when they told me that it was not my responsibility to keep the ditch lines mowed or the paper picked up, I was totally speechless.
If you are ever in the area, come and see my road. You might even want to drive on it. It won’t take long. But beware – there’s a little creek at the bottom of the hill so if the water’s up, you might not be able to go all the way.
